Where can 10,000 people sit down in a tent and within an hour’s time order and drink two liters of Munich's best lager from a dirndl clad waitress, order and eat from a 100-item menu, sing to a rock and roll polka band, cheer your tablemates as well as anyone nearby a half dozen times (yes, the tables are literally 4-inches apart if at all), nosh on football sized pretzels, buy a souvenir or three from persistent hawkers, and hear a dozen different languages at once.......Oktoberfest in Munich, of course!
This has to be the mother of all parties. And that description applies to what’s happening in another twelve gigantic tents on site all at the same time. Each of these temporary massive beer halls is surrounded by more food booths serving everything from salt roasted North Sea mackerel cooked over charcoal to wieners of every shape and size served on hard rolls with a dollop of golden brown mustard. Snuggled in between all of this madness is the largest set of amusement rides this side of Disneyland.

This was my second trip and the first in twenty years to the three-week "Taste of Bavaria." Once again, I was overwhelmed by what an absolute blast it is, and I'm not even a real beer drinker. If you go, make your reservations early, most certainly get a spot in one of the tents, and above all else be ready to learn some classic German beer hall songs. Dirndls and lederhosen are not required, but three quarters of the people have them on and they look fabulous!!!
